Programs at Dunham School
Along with the extensive curriculum/activity list that is a part of every classroom at Dunham, we take pride in the opportunity to provide a number of unique educational activities. These are listed below:
- Spanish Language classes
- All students in grades K-6 receive four days of instruction in Spanish from a credentialed Spanish teacher.
- P.E. Specialist
- We have a half time credentialed PE teacher who works with every class at least once a week.
- Music Program
- Dunham is fortunate to work with the Mr. Music program weekly in "grade level specific" music instruction.
- 4/6 After School Band
- For a nominal fee, students are given the opportunity to play a musical instrument during our after school band class taught my Matt Lane from Petaluma high School.
- Science Olympiad
- Dunham fielded two teams this year who participated in the Sonoma County Science Olympiad. This after school program is open to all interested 4-6 students, and is taught by the former president of the California Science Teacher Association Sharon Janulaw.
- S.T.R.A.W
- This year we have our 1,3,4,5,6 grade teachers trained in the STRAW program. Together with the students and docents from several Bay area science environmental organizations, our students work to restore valuable watershed areas throughout Sonoma and Marin counties.
- School Garden
- With the help of many parent volunteers, our garden is flourishing. Students will be working this year to supplement our salad bar lunches.
- Support Services:
RSP, Speech/Language/Counseling
- We are fortunate to have a strong support staff at Dunham to help every child meet his/her potential.
- Week-long Science adventures in Yosemite (5/6)
- Every other year our PTO supports a week-long trip for all our 5th and 6th graders at Yosemite Institute. Our students can’t stop talking about the experiences there.
- Walker Creek outdoor education (6th)
- Along with all the other 6th grades in Petaluma our students have the opportunity to attend Walker Creek Institute in the Spring where they have lots of science adventures, but they also get to meet the students they will be attending junior high and high school with.
- Angel Island Civil War simulation(5th)
- Every year our fifth grade students reenact the Civil War on Angel Island. Students even stand watch during the night!
- After school opportunities in music, art, science
- We offer “Move Over Mozart”, have offered chorus in the past and also fused glass art. We are open to new ideas for increasing opportunities for students after school.
- Extensive field trip opportunities in every class
- From trips to the fire department to the Rosicrucian Museum, all of our students have field trips as part of their curricular experiences.
